Selecting a Router

The first thing to think about with purchasing a router is the type of router you need

Know how much you want to spend.
  • Routers vary in prices $100 up to thousands of dollars depending on what you need or want to have in a router.

Check to see what routers are compatible with your ISP (Internet Provider).
  • Your ISP should have a list of compatible routers that are supported by there services, you just need to do a little research by going to your Internet Providers website and check the available list.
Make sure the router you are considering supports your internet speed
  • A good basis is that to get a router that offers more speed than your internet plan this will give you the best chance for the fastest speeds.

Check wireless protocols
  • Wireless protocols update as time goes on. When looking at routers it will tell you the speeds it supports. A quick Google search will let you know the available wireless standards that are available.

See if you need a mesh wi-fi or extenders to spread Wi-Fi throughout your whole house
  • Depending on the square footage and layout of your home you may need an extender to extend the wireless connection if you notice slower speeds or no connection in certain parts of your house.
  • Mesh Wi-Fi system can be used to amplify your Wi-Fi signal

Look at optional features (dual-band, tri-band)

Be aware that wi-fi standards change every couple years.
