Networking Basics

What You Need to Know to Build a Strong Network

Computer networking is the practice of connecting devices together to share resources, exchange data, and communicate with each other. Whether you're new to computer networking or looking to improve your skills, here are some networking basics to keep in mind:

  1. Know the components: Computer networks consist of several components, including routers, switches, hubs, and modems. Each component plays a unique role in the network, and understanding their functions is essential for troubleshooting and maintaining the network.

  2. Know the network types: There are several types of computer networks, including LANs, WANs, and MANs. Local Area Networks (LANs) are typically used within a small geographical area, like an office building. Wide Area Networks (WANs) connect devices across a larger geographic area, like a city or country. Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) are used to connect devices within a metropolitan area.

  3. Know the network protocols: Network protocols are a set of rules and standards that govern how devices communicate with each other. Some popular protocols include TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, and DNS. Understanding these protocols is essential for troubleshooting and optimizing network performance.

  4. Know the network topologies: Network topology refers to the physical or logical arrangement of devices in a network. Common network topologies include bus, ring, star, and mesh. Each topology has its strengths and weaknesses, and selecting the right topology depends on the network's goals and requirements.

  5. Know the security risks: Computer networks are vulnerable to security risks like hacking, malware, and phishing attacks. It's important to understand these risks and implement appropriate security measures like firewalls, antivirus software, and strong passwords.

  6. Know the network management tools: Network management tools like network monitoring software, traffic analysis tools, and configuration management tools can help you monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize network performance.

  7. Stay up to date: Computer networking is constantly evolving, and staying up to date with the latest technologies and trends is essential. Join online communities, attend conferences and training sessions, and read industry publications to keep your skills and knowledge current.

In conclusion, understanding the basics of computer networking is essential for building and maintaining a strong network. Whether you're a network administrator, IT professional, or simply interested in computer networking, keeping these fundamentals in mind can help you achieve your networking goals.

Selecting Bluetooth Headset

There are a couple things to think about prior to selecting a new Bluetooth headset. Here are a couple of the items that I look at when researching new Bluetooth headsets to purchase

  • Wear Style
    • When thinking about the different wear styles for Bluetooth headsets you have a couple options. When making these decisions think about how you will be using the headset and which option is the best secure fit for your needs. Everyone is different, I have different earbuds for different activities.
    • Earbud (In-Ear) - these style earbuds sit directly in the ear and kinda lock into place. I have noticed these work great for everyday use (sitting, walking, daily). Also, look to see if the earbuds have a cushion or just simply sit in the ear canal.
    • Over Ear - these style earbuds have a hook over the ear that secures the headset. I feel these work best for working out or outdoor activities. They offer a more secure fit than the average in-ear headset.
    • Over Head - these style headphones work for work, and workouts they just need to be a little bulky. I feel these headsets offer great sound quality and have good battery life. Some over-the-head options offer a wired connection in addition to the wireless option.
  • Connectivity
    • Something to think about is whether can you use the earbuds/headphones separately also known as mono or dual. Mono is when you can use one headset independently of the other headphone. Dual is when both headset/earbuds work together offering a better all-around sound quality
  • Battery
    • When using Bluetooth headsets the battery life is very important. A good thing to think about is that the earpiece lasts at least 4 hours during use. Also if the devices include a charging case to give you power on the go. A lot of headsets offer quick charge which means you can get an hour of playtime for just 15 minutes of charge time.
  • Brand
    • Some people are brand specific. The big brand names sometimes have the best quality but if you research some non-name brands you may find the same qualities in non-name brands.
The standard Bluetooth range is 30ft. Once you leave this range audio is choppy and breaks up.
